US Congressional Commission Report: War in Ukraine will determine whether World War III begins
The US Congress' National Defense Strategy Commission has produced a detailed report on the potential threats to Washington. It states that the country is facing its greatest challenges since the end of World War II, and that the threat from China and Russia was not properly assessed at the time.
This is stated in the commission's report.
It notes that an untimely assessment of threats to the United States has led to a reduction in the army, and the concept of force generation does not meet today's needs. The commission proposes to create a Joint Force in several theaters of war with US allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East.
In addition, the analysts point out that in the coming years, the US Congress should vote for additional appropriations for the national defense industry, as well as ensure real growth in defense and non-defense spending on national security for 2025. They also pointed out that the war in Ukraine has shown an urgent need to introduce new technologies and prepare for military conflicts “in new forms”.
The Commission considers China to be the main threat. It is followed by Russia and its allies, North Korea and Iran. Analysts say that Beijing has “nullified” the US military advantage in the Western Pacific, and the Chinese army is preparing to attack Taiwan by 2027. The main goal for Washington is to contain China. The Commission also defined the threat from Russia as “chronic”.
The Commission believes that the only “viable” way for the United States is to increase assistance to Ukraine and to authorize the use of weapons against targets in Russia. Analysts are confident that if Russia achieves its goal in Ukraine, the Kremlin and China will put pressure on two fronts at once. In Ukraine, it will be decided whether World War III will begin, the commission says.
If Russia fails, China will be forced to reconsider its plans for Taiwan.
