Poland wants permanent US military base - and plans to call it ‘Fort Trump’

Poland hopes the United States will soon finalize plans to establish a permanent US military base in the country, with Polish President Karol Nawrocki saying the facility would be named “Fort Trump.”

Nawrocki told Bloomberg Television that he believes a US decision is “just a question of time” and hopes construction can be completed before President Donald Trump’s term ends in 2029.

“When the work is finished by the US administration, by both governments, I think then President Trump will personally be able to participate in the inauguration of Fort Trump,” Nawrocki said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The project has not yet received final approval. Nawrocki said administrative and financial issues still need to be resolved.

Trump recently said there had been “major progress” in talks with Warsaw and that the location of the proposed base could be announced “very soon.”

Poland currently hosts about 10,000 US troops on a rotational basis and has pushed for years to secure a larger and more permanent American military presence.

The idea of a permanent US base was first proposed by Nawrocki’s predecessor, Andrzej Duda, in 2018. Duda also suggested the name “Fort Trump” and offered more than $2 billion toward the project, but the proposal did not materialize.

The renewed push comes as the Pentagon reviews US troop deployments in Europe and some European governments are concerned that Washington could reduce its military presence on the continent.

Nawrocki said Poland would also be willing to host US troops currently stationed in Germany if Washington decides to reduce its presence there.
