Man arrested in Warsaw after knife attack on two Ukrainians allegedly motivated by nationality

Polish police have arrested a 30-year-old man suspected of stabbing two Ukrainian nationals aboard a city bus in Warsaw in an attack motivated by the victims’ nationality, according to a police statement published on October 30.

The attack took place in mid-October. Police said the suspect repeatedly stabbed the two passengers, leaving them with multiple stab wounds and cuts. Both victims were hospitalized, while the attacker fled before officers arrived.

Investigators identified the suspect and spent several days searching for him. They eventually located him in a wooded area of Warsaw’s Bielany district, where he had been hiding and living, and arrested him last weekend.

The man faces three charges. Two relate to the attack on the Ukrainian nationals, including attempted infliction of serious bodily harm and causing injuries that impaired bodily functions for more than seven days.

Police said the suspect had previously served a prison sentence for a similar intentional offense and is accused of committing the latest crimes as a repeat offender.

The third charge concerns alleged criminal threats against another man in August 2024.

The offenses carry potential prison sentences of three to 20 years. At prosecutors’ request, a court ordered the suspect held in pretrial detention for three months.

The Warsaw-Żoliborz District Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the investigation.
