Norway trolls Trump with toilet tourism campaign after Nobel Prize insult
Norway's tourism agency has found an unusual way to respond to US President Donald Trump calling the country a "shithouse": by promoting some of the world's most spectacular public toilets.
"Norway makes shithouses great again," Visit Norway declared in a campaign that borrows Trump's signature political slogan, according to Forbes.
The agency's website asks visitors: "Are these the world's best shithouses?" - and showcases architect-designed public restrooms overlooking fjords, mountains, rivers and the sea.
The campaign follows Trump's remarks at a political rally in Michigan on October 25, when he criticized Norway for not awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize.
"Norway has become a shithouse country," Trump said, adding that he would not welcome Norwegian immigrants "because I didn't get the Nobel Prize."
The Norwegian government does not award the prize. The winner is selected by the independent Norwegian Nobel Committee, whose five members are appointed by Norway's parliament.
Rather than responding with a diplomatic dispute, Visit Norway turned the insult into an opportunity to promote the country's architectural attractions.
The featured restrooms are located along Norway's 18 National Scenic Routes, which stretch for approximately 2,240 kilometers (1,390 miles) through some of the country's most dramatic landscapes.
Among them is Ureddplassen, a wave-shaped restroom overlooking the sea along the Helgeland coast, near the site where a Norwegian submarine sank during World War II.
Other facilities were designed by prominent architects and artists, including Norwegian firms Snøhetta and Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter, as well as Swiss architect Peter Zumthor.
Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. The 2026 award went to South African judge and human rights advocate Navi Pillay.
Norway, meanwhile, is inviting tourists to admire its public toilets - whether they need to use them or not.
