Moldova-Romania power line to be named ‘Trump Liberty Line’

A planned high-voltage power line connecting Moldova and Romania will be named the “Trump Liberty Line,” the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau said. Washington is investing $130 million in the project, aimed at strengthening Moldova’s energy security and independence.

The planned interconnector will expand Moldova’s electricity links with Romania as the country seeks to reduce its energy vulnerabilities and strengthen connections with the European power grid.

“The Government of the Republic of Moldova supports initiatives that benefit the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, especially those that ensure the country’s security and energy infrastructure,” Moldovan government spokesperson Dumitru Ciorici told Reuters.

Romania also welcomed U.S. support for the project, with government spokesperson Ioana Dogioiu saying Washington’s involvement and financing underscored the interconnector’s strategic importance.

Moldova imports most of its electricity through existing connections with Romania and Ukraine. Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have repeatedly disrupted supplies.

The power line is the latest international infrastructure project to bear U.S. President Donald Trump’s name.

Other projects include a proposed transport corridor through Armenia and a planned permanent U.S. military base in Poland, as Reuters noted that governments have increasingly attached Trump’s name to projects while seeking favor with the U.S. president.
