Ottawa considers renaming Trump Avenue - Taco Avenue is an option
Ottawa City Council has taken the first step toward renaming a street named after US President Donald Trump, with proposed alternatives ranging from Obama Avenue and Gulf of Mexico Avenue to Taco Avenue - a reference to the acronym “Trump Always Chickens Out.”
The council unanimously backed moving forward with the renaming process last week, CNN reported.
Trump Avenue is a residential street in Ottawa's Central Park neighborhood and has carried the name for roughly 25 years. The neighborhood has a New York City theme, with nearby names including Staten Way, Madison Park and Gotham Private.
According to Ottawa City Councilor Tim Tierney, other suggested replacements include Ontario Avenue, Canada Avenue, Beaver Avenue, Canada Goose Avenue, Pelosi Avenue and Rosie O'Donnell Avenue.
The latter refers to the American comedian and longtime Trump antagonist, who moved to Ireland after his reelection.
The council vote came a day before Trump signed an executive order directing the US government to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” amid growing tensions between Washington and Ottawa over trade and tariffs.
Changing Trump Avenue's name, however, will require support from more than half of the street's residents, followed by a public consultation on the replacement.
Residents have been here before. In 2021, the 62 households on Trump Avenue were asked whether they wanted a new name. The result was a perfect tie: 21 voted in favor, 21 against and 20 did not vote.
Tierney said some of those opposed to the change were not necessarily Trump supporters but simply did not want the inconvenience of changing their addresses.
The new effort is not expected to move forward until after Ottawa's municipal elections at the end of October.
