Russia attacked a checkpoint on the border with Moldova with drones

Russia launched 168 drones and dozens of missiles of various types at Ukraine overnight on Aug. 20, with Kyiv region the main target, Ukraine's Air Force reported.

The attack included 36 Kh-101, Iskander-K and Kh-59 cruise and air-launched missiles, eight Kalibr cruise missiles, two Banderol loitering munitions and 168 strike drones.

Russia also launched weapons traveling on ballistic trajectories, including Zircon/Oniks, Iskander-M and S-400 missiles, according to the Air Force. It did not specify how many missiles of these types were launched.

Ukraine's air defenses shot down or suppressed 31 of the 36 Kh-101, Iskander-K and Kh-59 missiles, all eight Kalibr missiles, both Banderol munitions and 145 drones, according to preliminary data as of 9:30 a.m.

The Air Force recorded strikes at 28 locations across Ukraine and falling debris from intercepted weapons at two locations.

Beyond Kyiv and the surrounding region, Russia attacked a border crossing with Moldova in Odesa Oblast, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. Around 13,000 customers in the region remained without electricity following the attack, according to regional authorities. No casualties were reported there.

Zelenskyy also said Russian forces targeted gas infrastructure in Chernihiv Oblast.

The president renewed his call for additional air defense supplies, saying Ukraine still lacks sufficient defenses against ballistic missiles and specifically emphasizing the need for Patriot interceptors.

“Every additional missile saves the lives of our people,” Zelenskyy said.
