Zelensky confirms Ukrainian strikes on Russian airfields, refinery; Su-34 damaged

Ukrainian forces struck a major oil refinery and a military airfield in Russia overnight, while a Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber was damaged in an earlier strike, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on August 21.

Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian forces struck the Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez refinery in Perm, more than 1,600 kilometers (about 1,000 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

The refinery is one of Russia’s largest, with the capacity to process more than 13 million metric tons of crude oil annually. It produces gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel, among other petroleum products.

Ukraine also struck the Marinovka military airfield in Russia’s Volgograd region overnight, Zelensky said.

He added that Ukrainian forces had achieved “results in the Black Sea,” without providing further details.

Zelensky also confirmed the results of earlier Ukrainian strikes on military targets in Russia.

A Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber was damaged at the Akhtubinsk military airfield, about 600 kilometers (370 miles) from the front line, according to the president.

At Primorsko-Akhtarsk, roughly 180 kilometers (110 miles) away, Ukrainian forces struck a site used to store, prepare and launch attack drones used by Russia against Ukraine, Zelensky said.
