Drone attack reported at major Russian oil refinery over 1,500 km from Ukraine

Drone attack reported at major Russian oil refinery over 1,500 km from Ukraine

A drone attack was reported in Russia’s Perm region on August 21, with a fire breaking out at the Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez oil refinery, located more than 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) from Ukraine.

The Perm region’s Ministry of Territorial Security reported a drone threat early Friday morning. Russian Telegram channel Astra reported that the Lukoil refinery in Perm had been targeted.

Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez is one of Russia’s largest oil refineries, with an annual processing capacity of more than 13 million metric tons of crude oil. It produces gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel, among other petroleum products.

Operations at Perm airport were temporarily restricted amid the drone threat, according to Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsiya.

There was no immediate confirmation of who was responsible for the attack.

The same refinery was targeted in a Ukrainian drone attack in late July. Ukraine’s Security Service, the SBU, confirmed its involvement in that strike, which caused a large fire at the facility.
