FM Lavrov claims Russia's 'readiness for compromises' under certain conditions

Moscow is ready for compromises in negotiations on the war in Ukraine, but only if they do not affect Russia’s key security principles and the alleged “extermination” of the Russian language and Orthodox Church, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told RBC in an interview.

“We are always ready for compromises, or simply put, for a balance of interests. The most important thing is that the legitimate interests of every state are taken into account,” Lavrov said.

At the same time, he stated that compromises cannot concern “key, fundamental principles on which the life of the state depends, and most importantly — the lives of millions of people.”

In particular, Lavrov pointed to issues of “Russia’s security” as well as the alleged “extermination of the Russian language and the Orthodox Church.” According to him, the Russian delegation raised these topics during talks in Abu Dhabi.

At the same time, Lavrov said the goals of Russia’s forces “remain unchanged and are not subject to any situational compromises.”

Recently, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said she is preparing a list of concessions that Europe could demand from Russia as part of a settlement to the war in Ukraine.

The list will include the return of all Ukrainian children abducted during the war and restrictions on Russian armed forces. Kallas provided no further details.
