EU agrees largest-ever expansion of Russia sanctions list, adding 1,646 names
The European Union has agreed to add 1,646 people and entities to its Russia sanctions blacklist in the largest single expansion of the list to date, Euronews reported on Oct. 7.
The deal, reached by EU ambassadors in Brussels, covers 743 individuals and 826 entities accused of supporting Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. A further 77 Russian lawmakers will be sanctioned for standing in September’s State Duma election in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories.
EU foreign ministers are expected to formally approve the listings in Luxembourg on Oct. 12, after which the names will be made public.
Those targeted will face travel bans and asset freezes, while EU persons and companies will be prohibited from providing them with funds.
The additions will bring the EU’s Russia sanctions blacklist to almost 4,650 names.
Euronews reported that member states were keen to finalize the agreement amid a recent series of hybrid attacks, some attributed to Russia. Work has already begun on further listings in response to the drone incident at Leipzig airport in Germany.
