Fire breaks out at major Russian oil refinery after drone attack

A fire broke out at one of Russia's largest oil refineries in Yaroslavl following an overnight drone attack on November 3, with regional authorities confirming damage to the facility's infrastructure.

Yaroslavl Oblast Governor Mikhail Yevrayev acknowledged the damage and said emergency crews were working to extinguish the fire.

He claimed Russian air defenses had shot down 124 drones and said falling debris had damaged residential buildings. The claim could not be independently verified.

Videos and photographs published by Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+ and Russian independent outlet ASTRA appeared to show a large fire at the refinery.

The facility, Slavneft-YANOS, has a processing capacity of approximately 15 million metric tons of crude oil annually, making it one of Russia's largest refineries.

It produces gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel and lubricants, among other petroleum products. Such fuels are also used in Russia's military logistics.

Ukrainian forces previously struck the refinery twice in August, according to Ukraine's General Staff.

The full extent of the latest damage and any impact on refinery operations remain unclear. Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the November 3 attack.
