Canada imposes up to 50% tariffs on imports of American goods in response to new US tariffs
Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs of 15% to 50% on C$27.6 billion ($19.9 billion) worth of US goods starting Sept. 8, matching new American tariffs “dollar for dollar,” the Canadian Department of Finance said.
The counter-tariffs will target US goods in sectors including steel, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Individual tariff rates will correspond to the US rates imposed on the same goods, according to the department.
The measures come in response to the United States imposing 50% tariffs on C$27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods on Aug. 22.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had pledged to respond to the US measures “dollar for dollar.”
The latest measures mark a further escalation in the trade dispute between the two neighboring countries. On Aug. 24, US President Donald Trump also threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian automobiles, auto parts and steel to 50% in 2027.
