Sweden announces $28 million in additional defense support for Ukraine
Sweden will provide Ukraine with an additional 270 million Swedish kronor (more than $28 million) in defense support, primarily aimed at strengthening the country's air defenses, the Swedish government announced on August 27.
Of the new funding, $14 million will go to the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a NATO-administered initiative through which allies and partner countries fund purchases of U.S. defense equipment for Ukraine.
The package includes advanced air defense systems and ammunition, which the Swedish government described as crucial to Ukraine's ability to defend itself against continued Russian attacks.
“Sweden's support is long-term, substantial and based on Ukraine's needs and priorities,” Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson said. “By continuing to support the PURL initiative, Ukraine can rapidly gain access to high-priority American materiel.”
This marks Sweden's fifth contribution to PURL. Including the latest funding, Stockholm has provided a total of $552 million to the initiative.
