21 explosive devices found near power lines in Germany's Saxony
German authorities found and defused 21 homemade explosive devices positioned near high-voltage power lines in the eastern state of Saxony following a series of attempted attacks on the electricity grid, MDR reported.
All 21 devices were discovered south of the Graustein substation near Schleife in the Görlitz district, according to the Dresden Prosecutor General's Office and Saxony's State Criminal Police Office.
Police searched the area for three days, from Friday through Sunday. Nine additional devices were found during the operation, bringing the total to 21.
Investigators said the devices were intended to damage electricity infrastructure by causing short circuits. Power supplies remained uninterrupted.
Similar sabotage incidents have been reported in the German states of Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia. A claim-of-responsibility letter linked to those incidents also contained indications of planned attacks in Saxony.
The investigation is being conducted by Saxony's Central Office for Extremism. Authorities have not identified those responsible.
