Polish military fishes suspected Russian Gerbera drone out of Baltic Sea
Polish troops have recovered a military drone believed to be of Russian origin from the Baltic Sea near the country's northwestern coast, Poland's defense minister said.
The drone was spotted near a beach in Rusinowo, close to Jarosławiec, by Polish Navy personnel during a routine patrol and was pulled from the water.
Preliminary inspection indicates that the aircraft is a Russian Gerbera drone, according to Poland's Armed Forces Operational Command. Gerbera drones are commonly used as decoys, although some versions can carry payloads.
Polish radar systems recorded no violation of the country's airspace, suggesting that the drone had drifted to the Polish coast by sea, Operational Command spokesperson Lt. Col. Jacek Goryszewski told RMF24.
Military police, bomb disposal specialists and other services were called to inspect the drone and determine whether it was safe.
Polish journalist Mariusz Marszałkowski noted that the drone was recovered not far from the Polish Air Force training ground at Wicko Morskie. Polish authorities have not said whether its presence in the area was deliberate.
Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk said the available information pointed to the drone being of Russian origin and that it would now be examined by the relevant services.
