Poland arrests second man over alleged threats against Prime Minister Tusk

Polish police have arrested a second man in two days over alleged threats against Prime Minister Donald Tusk, with the latest suspect accused of publicly calling for the murder of senior officials.

The 46-year-old man was detained on October 12 in Oborniki, west-central Poland, government spokesperson Adam Szłapka said, according to TVP World.

Prosecutors said the suspect was charged on October 13 with inciting the murder of and insulting Tusk, parliamentary speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty and a journalist from public broadcaster TVP Info.

He also faces charges of insulting Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, lawmaker Krzysztof Paszyk and former President Lech Wałęsa.

The arrest followed the detention of another man, reportedly around 60 years old, on October 11 over alleged threats to assassinate Tusk.

Polish security officials held an emergency meeting that day after receiving information by email about a possible attack on Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz.

Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the minister coordinating Poland's intelligence services, said authorities considered the threats serious, citing a high likelihood that they could be carried out.

Authorities have not reported any connection between the two suspects.

Poland has faced heightened security concerns amid Russia's war against Ukraine, while domestic politics remain deeply polarized.
