Ukraine, Romania open first new border crossing in nearly 20 years

Ukraine and Romania opened a new road border crossing over the Tisza River on Oct. 8, the first new crossing between the two countries in Ukraine's Zakarpattia region in nearly 20 years.
The Bila Tserkva–Sighetu Marmației crossing is the third road crossing connecting Zakarpattia with Romania, Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Mykola Kalashnyk said.
The new route is expected to ease congestion at existing crossings and improve cross-border travel, particularly for residents of the Solotvyno community, which has a large ethnic Romanian population and many families with relatives across the border.

Initially, the crossing will handle up to 400 passenger cars per day.
Ukraine built the access road and installed temporary border and customs facilities, while Romania constructed the new bridge over the Tisza River and the border crossing infrastructure.
The crossing opened using temporary facilities while work continues on a permanent complex. Once completed, it is expected to accommodate an additional 360 trucks and 50 buses per day.
