Ukraine and Spain sign security agreement. Kyiv to receive €1 billion in military aid in 2024

Ukraine and Spain have signed a bilateral agreement on security guarantees. Madrid has committed to providing 1 billion euros in military aid in 2024, as evidenced by the press conference with the participation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
"We have now signed a political agreement, which has a very important role. This is an agreement about the future, and it is an example of our determination to provide Ukraine with all the tools to ensure Ukraine's stability," said the head of the Spanish government, adding that Spain became the tenth country with which Kyiv concluded such an agreement.
The agreement covers the financial, military, and production spheres, as well as support, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and demining.
Zelenskyy noted that Spain has pledged to provide 1 billion euros in military aid this year, and overall an additional 5 billion euros for the period 2024-2027 through the European Peace Facility. In particular, Sánchez noted that Madrid is committed to helping with air defenses to protect civilians and infrastructure.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is visiting Spain today. He was given a reception by King Felipe VI and had a meeting with the heads of chambers and factions of the Spanish parliament.
What are security agreements?
In 2023, on the sidelines of the July NATO summit in Vilnius, the leaders of the "Group of Seven" (G7) agreed on a Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine. The countries noted that each would work with Ukraine on specific bilateral long-term obligations and agreements in the field of security. Ukraine, in turn, undertook reforms.
More than 20 countries joined this initiative. Britain became the first country to enter into a final agreement.
Since then, bilateral agreements with Ukraine have also been signed by Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Finland, and Latvia.
