Ukraine’s Supreme Court has rejected former President Petro Poroshenko's lawsuit challenging National Security and Defense Council sanctions imposed against him, according to a livestream of the court session.

Poroshenko's defense team said it would appeal the ruling, calling it "unlawful and unfounded."

His lawyer also claimed that officers of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) were pressuring the court, and said he would raise the issue with the agency's leadership.

Sanctions against Poroshenko

On February 13, 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree imposing RNBO sanctions against several Ukrainian businessmen and lawmakers, including Poroshenko.

Poroshenko called the decision "unconstitutional" and "politically motivated," alleging that Zelenskyy's entire team, the Cabinet of Ministers and members of the NSDC were involved.

hromadske sources cited the following as grounds for the sanctions against Poroshenko:

  • A criminal case alleging treason, in which Poroshenko is accused of colluding with former MP Viktor Medvedchuk and Russian leadership to allow the state energy company Centrenergo to purchase coal from temporarily occupied areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts;
  • Poroshenko's role in founding the Party of Regions and his work in Viktor Yanukovych's government, during which — as foreign minister — he participated in preparing the Kharkiv Accords;
  • Alleged cooperation with Russia through the Roshen candy factory in Lipetsk and the Sevmorzavod shipyard in temporarily occupied Crimea.

ZN.UA reported that the sanctions against Poroshenko were introduced based on classified information provided by Filip Pronin, the newly appointed head of Ukraine's State Financial Monitoring Service.
