Ukraine's parliament to keep voting from bomb shelter during long air raids
Ukraine's parliament will be able to continue working during lengthy Russian air raids under a new system allowing lawmakers to vote from a bomb shelter.
When an air raid alert is issued, lawmakers will suspend the plenary session and move to the shelter, parliament speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk and parliamentary administration chief Viacheslav Shtuchnyi told journalists.
If the alert lasts for an extended period, lawmakers will be able to resume work from the shelter rather than wait for the all-clear.
The facility has working space for 368 lawmakers. Ukraine's parliament currently has 392 members.
The voting system will be tested this week. Lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelezniak previously said MPs would likely vote using their phones after connecting to a designated network and logging into the system.
Shtuchnyi said the system was developed by parliament's own staff without using state budget funds.
During shorter air raid alerts, parliament will continue its usual practice of suspending proceedings and returning to the main chamber once the threat has passed.
