Zelenskyy suspends Ukraine's prosecutor general as parliament prepares dismissal vote
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suspended Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko from office amid an escalating confrontation between the outgoing prosecutor general and Ukraine's anti-corruption agencies.
The suspension was announced in a presidential decree on Sept. 14. Under Ukrainian law, the president can suspend officials he appoints while martial law is in force.
The move came hours after Kravchenko said he had signed a notice of suspicion against Semen Kryvonos, head of Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU). The agency called Kravchenko's actions part of a “systemic attack” on independent anti-corruption institutions.
Zelenskyy subsequently submitted a motion to parliament to dismiss Kravchenko, saying the prosecutor general had “only one path: dismissal from office.”
A parliamentary law enforcement committee unanimously backed Kravchenko's dismissal earlier on Sept. 14. The full parliament is expected to vote on his removal on Sept. 15.
