'Ukraine Is Right To Be Worried' – Senior Policy Fellow European Council

Right before the anticipated phone call between Russian and American presidents Putin and Trump, Hromadske spoke to Andrew Wilson, Senior Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations. President Trump’s rhetoric regarding Russia and NATO has generated widespread fear in Kyiv, that this would be push for some kind of a Yalta 2.0 agreement with Russia at Ukraine’s expense. While Wilson thinks type of agreement would not happen, he says “Ukraine is right to be worried.”

Wilson also thinks that Ukraine should put its national interests first. There is much pressure on the country to be more concerned with practical results but “giving in to bad deals negotiated by other people; that’s not pragmatic,” he says.

Wilson predicts that 2017 will not be easy for Ukraine, as “most of the proposals are just abject surrender.”
