Abuse of paramedic in Russian captivity

Military paramedic Orest Hrytsiuk, who spent nine months in Russian captivity, said that Russian representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross insulted Ukrainian prisoners and filmed their abuse.

"They came, their Russian representatives, we were walking, singing songs - they filmed it all on video, laughing, slapping us on the shoulders and calling us all kinds of bad names. These are representatives of the International [Committee] of the Red Cross from Russia," he said.

Hrytsiuk said the request from the International Committee of the Red Cross that he was in captivity came a week after he was exchanged.

The ICRC office in Ukraine responded that any inhumane treatment of prisoners of war during captivity is prohibited under the Third Geneva Convention and is unacceptable.

Court leaves Knyazev in custody

On September 26, the Appeals Chamber of the High Anti-Corruption Court left former Supreme Court Chief Justice Vsevolod Knyazev in custody until October 16, while the bail amount was reduced from UAH 55 million to UAH 45 million ($1.2 million).

Knyazev complained that his property and accounts, as well as those of his close relatives, had been seized. And because of this, he allegedly does not have the money to pay for Internet access, which is a paid service in the pre-trial detention center. He also wants to post bail.

This comes after the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office and the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine reported exposing "large-scale corruption" in the Supreme Court. Law enforcers charged Knyazev and his lawyer accomplice with bribery.
