Attack on capital on Kyiv Day, farewell to fallen national guardsman, road accident in Obukhiv: highlights of May 28

Attack on the capital
According to updated information from the General Staff, on the night of May 28, Russians attacked Ukraine by launching 59 Iranian Shahed attack drones. Ukrainian defenders destroyed 58 drones.
The Kyiv City Military Administration stated that this was the most massive drone attack on Kyiv since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.
In the Holosiivskyi district of the capital, the drone strike caused debris to hit a 7-story non-residential building, killing one person and injuring another. The roof of a shopping and entertainment center caught fire, and a fire broke out on the territory of a construction site.
Farewell to the National Guard soldier
In the town of Talne, Cherkasy Oblast, people said goodbye to the deceased National Guard soldier Vadym Bondarenko, who was hit by a judge’s car in Kyiv.
According to Channel 24, a corridor of fresh flowers and wreaths was set up near Vadym Bondarenko's house. Suspilne also reports that the funeral ceremony moved to the central square of the city. The coffin was greeted on its knees. The asphalt was covered with peonies and irises.
The National Guard officer is survived by his wife and three children – two older children from his wife's first marriage and their 2-year-old daughter. An accident in Obukhiv
In Obukhiv, Kyiv Oblast, a motorcyclist crashed into a car and then into a group of pedestrians. Five people were injured.
According to Andrii Niebytov, head of the National Police in Kyiv Oblast, an 18-year-old Yamaha motorcycle driver ignored a red light, crashed into a car, and then into a group of pedestrians.
Currently, five victims have been hospitalized: the driver and passenger of the motorcycle, as well as three civilians who were walking along the roadside. According to preliminary reports, all the victims sustained numerous injuries of severe and moderate severity.
Conflict in Odesa Oblast
A video of a police officer speaking in Russian to people at a police station in Odesa Oblast and saying that they were “newcomers” was circulated on social media. The police in Odesa Oblast launched an internal investigation.
The police reported that they had seen the video while monitoring social media. The actions of the police officer, his supervisor, and two other colleagues who were present during the conflict – an operational officer and an assistant operational officer – will be assessed based on the results of the investigation.
Zelenskyy’s proposal
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has submitted a proposal to the Verkhovna Rada to impose sanctions against Iran for 50 years. Among other things, the head of state proposes:
- Restrictions (complete ban) on trade transactions with Iranian residents in goods subject to the law on state control over the transfer of military and dual-use goods.
- Restrictions (complete ban) on trade in services related to the supply, sale, transfer, production, or use of military and dual-use goods.
- Complete cessation of transit of resources, flights, and transport by Iranian residents through the territory of Ukraine related to the above-mentioned transactions.
