An important bridge for Russian logistics was blown up near occupied Melitopol, and G7 leaders promised to bring Putin to justice. Here's what you may have missed from the previous night.

Bridge blown up near occupied Melitopol

A bridge was blown up near the occupied city of Melitopol, Zaporizhzhya Oblast. Although its structure did not completely collapse, traffic had to be suspended. Mayor of Melitopol Ivan Fedorov says that it is a strategically important bridge for the Russian military, where they used to transfer equipment.

G7 leaders say they will bring Putin to justice

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) countries have jointly stated that they will hold Russian President Vladimir Putin accountable for his actions in Ukraine.

They stressed that Russia in particular will have to pay for the restoration of vital infrastructure.

The Netherlands expressed readiness to establish a special tribunal to try Russia's war crimes in Ukraine. The International Criminal Court, established to prosecute those responsible for crimes against humanity, genocide and aggression against another state, already operates in The Hague. However, Russia does not recognize its jurisdiction.

Zelenskyy invites Russia to withdraw its troops for Christmas

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed to Russia to start withdrawing its troops from Ukraine on Christmas Day to prove its ability to abandon aggression.

The President of Ukraine also officially proposed to convene a Global Peace Formula Summit to determine how and when the points of the Ukrainian peace formula can be implemented.

Ukrainians will be invited to visit Czech defense enterprises

The Czech Republic plans to invite thousands of Ukrainian specialists to work at defense industry enterprises.

According to Deputy Defense Minister Tomáš Kopečný, Czechia plans to start mass production of weapons for Ukraine next year. The initiative will be financed by the Czech Republic's NATO partners.

European Council suspends payments to Hungary

The European Council decided to suspend the payment of approximately 6.3 billion euros from the EU budget to Budapest due to violations of the rule of law in the country.

EU member states acknowledged that Hungary has taken corrective measures to remedy the situation. However, they were not enough to eliminate the risks to the EU budget.
