The UK has sent another Sea King helicopter to Ukraine, about 20 houses were flooded in Kyiv Oblast due to an ice jam, and Turkey canceled the visit of the Swedish Defense Minister because of the burning of the Quran in Stockholm. Here is what you may have missed from the previous night.

A helicopter from the UK

The UK has handed over another Sea King helicopter to Ukraine. It will be a “powerful reinforcement” for the Ukrainian Navy.

The UK has already trained 10 Ukrainian crews for Sea King helicopters. The first announcement of their transfer to Ukraine was made by the UK Secretary of Defense in late November 2022. At that time, he said that Ukraine would receive three helicopters, one of which has already been sent.

Turkey cancels visit of Swedish Defense Minister

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar called the visit of Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson to Turkey scheduled for January 27 “pointless” and Ankara decided to cancel it. The reason was the burning of the Quran, the holy book of Islam, near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.

Flooding of houses in Kyiv Oblast

About 20 houses in Kyiv Oblast were flooded due to an ice jam on the Desna River. The sappers conducted a series of explosions to lower the water level and prevent flooding in the coastal areas. The Desna River is currently being monitored.

Dialogue on Leopard tanks

Commenting on Germany's reluctance to provide Ukraine with Leopard tanks, White House National Security Advisor John Kirby said that Berlin is “going through its own process” in this regard.

At the same time, the newly appointed German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, when asked about the supply of Leopard tanks to Kyiv, said that Berlin was in “very close dialogue” on this issue with international partners, primarily the United States.

At the same time, Pistorius said that he plans to visit Ukraine in the near future, probably within the next four weeks.
