"Congress of deputies" to be convened in unrecognized "Transnistria". They may appeal to Putin to "join" Russia

On February 28, the unrecognized Transnistrian Republic will hold a so—called congress of deputies of all levels, which may address Russian President Vladimir Putin with a request for the republic to join the Russian Federation. Nevertheless, Moldova has no reason to believe that the situation in the region could deteriorate.

The "Transnistrian" politician Gennady Ciorba first wrote about a possible appeal to Putin with a request for "accession".

According to him, such an event as a "congress of deputies" is convened to make important decisions. In particular, he says, the second such congress declared "the independence of Transnistria."

Despite the fact that the purpose of the congress is not announced, Ciorba assumed that "on behalf of the citizens of Transnistria" they will ask to "annex" the region to Russia.

The politician also points out that the next day, February 29, the Russian president is scheduled to address the Federal Assembly. In it, Putin is supposed to announce the request of "Transnistrians to join Russia," and the Federal Assembly will decide to grant it.

How did Moldova react?

The Bureau for Reintegration Policies stated that it is closely monitoring the situation in Transnistria, Deschide.MD writes. Chisinau says it has no reason to believe that the situation in the region could deteriorate.

"We are convinced that Tiraspol is aware of the consequences it will face in case of rash steps," Deschide.MD quoted a statement from the Moldovan Bureau for Reintegration Policies.
