Consideration of mobilization bill, burning of Russian SU-34: highlights for January 4

The parliamentary Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence has begun considering a new law on mobilization. In Russia, a Su—34 fighter—bomber burned down at an airfield near Chelyabinsk. We have collected the main news for January 4, 2024.

Consideration of the draft law on mobilization

The Rada Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence has begun considering a new law on mobilization.

The meeting of the committee was attended by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Chief of the General Staff Serhiy Shaptala and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.

Discussions with the Armed Forces command and representatives of the Defense Ministry will continue for several days.

Russian fighter jet catches fire

Overnight, a Su-34 fighter-bomber burned down at the Shagol airfield near Chelyabinsk, Russia.

According to hromadske's source in the special services, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry was involved in the incident.

Missile attack on Kropyvnytskyi

In the morning, Russians fired a missile at Kropyvnytskyi. It was probably an X-59 missile. The attack damaged the buildings of several enterprises owned by local energy companies.

In particular, one of the facilities of NPC Ukrenergo in the city was damaged. One person was killed and five others were injured. The facility of PJSC Kirovohradoblenergo was also damaged, with two power engineers injured.

Overhead power lines were cut off as a result of the attack. Household consumers and the railroad were de-energized.

Strikes on the command post in Sevastopol

Russian occupation authorities announced an attack on the temporarily occupied Crimea. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the peninsula was attacked with airborne guided missiles. Ukraine was accused of the attack.

According to the occupation administration, Russian air defense systems shot down ten missiles.

The local Telegram channel Crimean Wind claims that explosions were also heard in Yevpatoria. A military air defense unit near the village of Uyutne in Yevpatoria district was allegedly hit.

Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk commented on the attack. He posted a screenshot with information about the damage to the Russian military unit.

"Greetings to the occupiers in Crimea! [...] Once again, I thank the pilots of the Air Force and all those who planned the operation for their impeccable combat work," the commander stated.

Later, the Ukrainian Armed Forces Strategic Communications Department reported that Ukrainian troops had hit the command post of the Russian military formation in Sevastopol.
