The Ukrainian Armed Forces confirmed the destruction of the Russian A—50 long—range radar detection aircraft. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Switzerland to take part in the World Economic Forum. We have collected the main news for January 15, 2024.
Destruction of a Russian A-50 aircraft
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi confirmed the destruction of the Russian A-50 long-range radar detection aircraft and the enemy Il-22 air control center.
Subsequently, the press secretary of the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Yurii Ihnat, said that the Il-22 still reached the airfield in Anapa, however, due to significant damage, it was probably beyond repair.
According to the head of Ukrainian intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, Russia currently has only eight A-50s in good condition, and the destruction of one of these aircraft would likely affect Russia's ability to maintain round-the-clock communications in the combat zone.
Threats to journalist Nikolov
Yurii Nikolov said that on January 14, he and his neighbors “had a scandal”. Unknown people banged on the door, shouted for the journalist to “go serve”, and covered the door with pieces of paper.
The journalist suggests that this is due to his investigations of corruption in the Ministry of Defense, in particular, the purchase of food for the military at inflated prices (for example, eggs for 17 hryvnia apiece).
The police are investigating the threat to the journalist.
Zelenskyy's visit to Switzerland
On January 15, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Switzerland on a working visit, during which he will take part in the World Economic Forum in Davos.
After a meeting with the country's President Viola Amherd, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine and Switzerland, starting tomorrow, January 16, will begin preparations for the Global Peace Summit at the level of state leaders.
Romanian farmers extended blockade
On the morning of January 15, Romanian farmers blocked the movement of trucks through another checkpoint on the border with Ukraine — Vicovo de Sus, which is opposite Krasnoilsk, Ukraine. The Siret checkpoint, located opposite the Ukrainian checkpoint Porubne, has been blocked intermittently for the third day.
