Euromaidan Activist Chornovol Placed Under House Arrest

Kyiv's Pechersk district court has ruled for former MP, journalist and Maidan activist Tetiana Chornovol to be under house arrest until June 8. She is suspected of killing a person during the Revolution of Dignity.

This is stated in a video from the courtroom shared on Facebook by a European Solidarity faction MP Volodymyr Aryev.

This comes six days after investigators from the State Bureau of Investigation have served former journalist and MP Tetiana Chornovol with charges of killing a man in a fire at the Party of Regions office in 2014.

The ex-deputy must also hand in her passport, come to the investigator or court at the first request and wear an electronic tag.

"It's actually quite funny. I spent a month sitting at home because my leg was 'torn off', the next month because of the quarantine and now under house arrest. What's changed?" Chornovol said.

The SBI stated that Chornovol, who was an active participant of the Euromaidan, on February 18, 2014, was managing the activities of a group of persons and directly participated in the arson of a building in the center of Kyiv, where the Party of Regions office was located.

A 65-year-old employee of the Party of Regions office, Volodymyr Zakharov, was killed in the fire at the time. He did not leave the building but went upstairs to the office, where he died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Earlier, the former journalist called the events "political repressions". Chornovol believes these are attempts to "rewrite Maidan history".

If proven guilty, Chornovol faces imprisonment of 10 to 15 years or life imprisonment.
