The European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for Ukraine and Moldova to be granted candidate status for membership of the European Union without delay, reported its press service.

By a majority vote, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on June 23 calling on EU heads of state and government to grant Ukraine and Moldova EU candidate status "immediately".

The same is proposed for Georgia, but only "once its government has delivered" on the priorities indicated by the European Commission.

MEPs said that such a decision amid Russia's war against Ukraine would be equated to a demonstration of "leadership, resolve and vision."

At the same time, they insist that there is no "fast track" to EU membership, and that the country's accession will remain a structured, "merit-based" process, fulfilling the criteria for EU membership and dependent on the effective implementation of reforms.

Now the final decision on whether to grant Ukraine candidate status will be announced by the European Council — this meeting of EU leaders is scheduled for the EU summit in Brussels on June 23-24. For Ukraine to receive the status, the unanimous consent of the 27 EU leaders is required.
