The US Department of Defense unveiled the list of weaponry Ukraine will receive under the new $ 700 million aid package.
Ukraine will receive:
- High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems and ammunition;
- Five counter-artillery radars;
- Two air surveillance radars;
- 1,000 Javelins and 50 Command Launch Units;
- 6,000 anti-armor weapons;
- 15,000 155mm artillery rounds;
- Four Mi-17 helicopters;
- 15 tactical vehicles;
- Spare parts and equipment.
The US Department of Defense did not specify how many HIMARS systems Ukraine will receive, but Reuters, citing a Pentagon official, says Kyiv would initially receive HIMARS systems. The official added that it would take about three weeks to train Ukrainian forces on the use of the new systems.
Background
Earlier, the Office of the President of Ukraine called on Western partners to provide Ukraine with US MLRS so that the Ukrainian Armed Forces could unblock the Black Sea and prevent a global food crisis.
MLRS based on the HIMARS wheel-mounted launcher can perform the role of both multiple rocket launcher and operational-tactical missile systems with a range of up to 300 kilometers.
On May 30, President Biden told reporters that the US would not send to Ukraine missile systems capable of striking the Russian Federation. Later, Michael McFaul, former US National Security Council, said that Ukraine would receive new packages of high-precision missiles from the US with a longer range than the Armed Forces of Ukraine have now, but not missiles that could strike deep inside Russia.
