From June 18, Lithuania bans the transit of sanctioned goods and technologies between Russia and Kaliningrad Oblast, situated between Lithuania and Poland, said the Governor of Kaliningrad Oblast Anton Alikhanov, publishing a letter from the Lithuanian railway operator LTG Cargo.
The ban was introduced after an explanation from the EU Commission. The letter says that if the sanctioned goods and cargo go from one part of Russia to another, but through the EU – their transportation is prohibited. Transit through Lithuania can take place only if the goods are loaded before June 17.
The governor said that the ban would affect 40-50% of products transported from Russia through Lithuania, in particular, building materials, cement, and metal. Alikhanov also says that now the Ust-Luga-Baltiysk ferry line requires s additional vessels to supply goods.
The Russian official considers the Lithuanian ban "a serious violation of the right to free entry and exit from Kaliningrad Oblast."
Kaliningrad Oblast has no mainland connection with the rest of Russia: the region is separated from Russia by the territories of Lithuania and Poland. However, the region has access to the Baltic Sea.
