Massive Russian attack and conclusions of Verkhovna Rada committees on mobilization draft law: highlights of January 8

On the night of January 8, and in the morning, Russian troops launched another air attack on Ukraine. Two Verkhovna Rada committees considered the government's draft law on mobilization. Here is a summary of the main events of January 8, 2024.

Russian attack against Ukraine

At night, the occupiers once again attacked Ukraine with attack drones and missiles. There are dead and wounded in various localities. Rescuers were working at the sites of the attacks to clear the rubble and help the victims.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that a total of 59 air attack weapons were in the sky: 8 Shaheds, 7 S-300/S-400 anti-aircraft guided missiles, 4 X-47M2 Kinzhal air defense missiles, 24 X-101/X-555/X-55 cruise missiles, 8 X-22 cruise missiles, 6 Iskander-M ballistic missiles, and 2 X-31P guided missiles.

As a result, the Defense Forces destroyed all the drones and 18 X-101/X-555/X-55 cruise missiles. Not all of the enemy missiles that were not shot down reached their targets.

Review of the draft law on mobilization

The Committee on Anti-Corruption Policy believes that the government draft law No. 10378 on mobilization needs to be improved. The parliamentarians identified several problematic provisions that could lead to corruption risks.

In addition, another parliamentary committee, the Committee on Social Policy, also did not support the adoption of the government's draft law on mobilization in the form in which it was submitted to the Verkhovna Rada.

It suggested that alternative draft laws on mobilization and proposals from the Ministry of Social Policy should be taken into account.

In addition, the Committee recommends that a separate draft law on the discharge of conscripts be developed, which would take into account proposals for their discharge within 2 months.

Rescue operations in Pokrovsk district completed

Search and rescue operations have been completed in the Pokrovsk district of Donetsk region after the occupiers' attack on January 6. More than 100 human body fragments were found at the site of the attack.

According to the preliminary report, 11 people were killed and 10 were wounded in the strike. Five of the dead have already been identified: three people from the village of Rivne — a 3-year-old girl, her 32-year-old father and 30-year-old mother, and a 34-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman from the Pokrovsk district.

Suspicions to former Defense Ministry officials

Former officials of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine have been served with new suspicions of embezzling almost another billion hryvnias in the procurement of bulletproof vests for the Defense Forces.

As noted, the organizers of the scheme entered into a contract for the supply of a large batch of bulletproof vests with an Eastern European company, the beneficial owners of which are Russian citizens.

However, the examination of the purchased armor plates showed that they did not meet the declared class of protection and, therefore, posed a danger to the lives of servicemen in combat conditions.

At the same time, Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umierov announced the discovery of new corruption violations in the defense ministry.
