NATO Recognizes Ukraine As Aspirant Country

The North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) has recognized Ukraine’s aspirations to become a fully—fledged member of the organization, according to the NATO website.

The North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) has recognized Ukraine’s aspirations to become a fully-fledged member of the organization, according to the NATO website.

“Currently, four partner countries have declared their aspirations for NATO membership: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Ukraine,” the announcement read.

According to the NATO website, countries aspiring to join the Alliance have to demonstrate ability to “contribute to security in the Euro-Atlantic area,” and they must also “meet certain political, economic and military criteria.” 

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg previously stated that “the doors [to NATO] are open for Ukraine, but a number of requirements must be met.”
