New aid package from World Bank, shelling of Kurakhove in Donbas: last night's highlights

New aid package from World Bank

The World Bank announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth $610 million. The funds should help finance expenses related to child and family benefits, medical services, civil servants' salaries and utility bills.

Shelling of Kurakhove

On the evening of December 20, Russian occupation forces shelled the town of Kurakhove in Donetsk Oblast with artillery, wounding at least one person, according to regional authorities.

Zelenskyy's likely visit to Washington

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to arrive in Washington on December 21 to talk to US President Joe Biden and address the Congress, US media report citing sources.

Proceeds from nationalization of Russian banks

The state budget has received the first $80 million as a result of the seizure of property of the Russian Federation and its residents in Ukraine, according to a group of analysts Trap Aggressor, citing a letter from the State Treasury Service of Ukraine.


Detention of employees of Kherson remand prison

Employees of the State Bureau of Investigation detained two more inspectors of the Kherson detention center, who worked for the Russian occupiers during the temporary occupation of the city. The detainees face life imprisonment.

Other news:

  • The United States plans to transfer Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine in the next package of military aid, CNN reports;
  • on December 20, the head of the faction of the ruling party of Georgia "Georgian Dream" Mamuka Mdinaradze said that Mikheil Saakashvili's visit to his homeland was allegedly a special operation of Ukraine to involve Tbilisi in the war. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry responded that Kyiv has never interfered in the internal affairs of Georgia;
  • Israel handed over generators of different capacities to the institutions of Kherson Oblast: 110 kVA, 170 kVA, 220 kVA and 250 kVA.
