New Canadian sanctions against Russians, transfer of funds confiscated in US to Ukraine: last night's higlights

Canada has imposed sanctions against Russians involved in spreading disinformation, and the funds of a Russian oligarch confiscated in the United States will be transferred to Ukraine for the first time in history. Here's what you may have missed from the previous night,

New Canadian sanctions against Russians

Canada has slapped sanctions on 38 people and 16 organizations it considers involved in spreading Russian disinformation.

The sanctions list includes cultural figures: Mikhail Boyarsky, Nikolai Baskov, Dima Bilan, Oleg Gazmanov, Mikhail Galustyan, Irina Allegrova, Victoria Daineko, Polina Gagarina, Nikolai Rastorguev, Nadezhda Babkina, Alexander Buynov, Dana Borisova, Larisa Dolina, Dmitry Duzhev, etc.

In addition, sanctions were imposed against state media outlets RIA Novosti, Rossiya Segodnya, Prime, Inosmi, TOK, KOT, Baltnews, Ukraina.ru, Social Navigator, and Arktika.ru, as well as United World International and the Anti-Repression Foundation.

Transfer of funds confiscated in the United States to Ukraine

The $5.4 million confiscated in the United States from sanctioned Russian businessman Konstantin Malofeyev will be used to help Ukraine,U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said during a meeting with Ukrainian Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin on February 3.

"Today, I am announcing that I have authorized the first ever transfer of forfeited Russian assets for use in Ukraine... The forfeited funds will next be transferred to the State Department to support the people of Ukraine," Garland said.

Generators from Germany

Kharkiv Oblast has received nine high-power generators from the German government to connect heating points, according to German Ambassador to Ukraine Anka Feldhusen.

She noted that these are generators with a capacity of 440 kW to 1000 kW. They will be used to connect boiler houses and heating points.

  • a fire broke out at an industrial plant and a neighboring oil depot in the Borisov district of Belgorod Oblast of the Russian Federation. Local authorities claimed that it was allegedly the result of "shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine".
