New military aid from Canada and Germany, Akhmetov's trial with Russia: highlights of today

Canada and Germany announce new military aid packages. Businessman Rinat Akhmetov will demand compensation from Russia for damage to his assets. Summonses will be sent regardless of the place of military registration. We have collected the key news of April 11.

New military aid

German authorities have announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, which includes reconnaissance drones.

The German government also plans to transfer another Dachs vehicle, three Iris-T SLM air defense systems and missiles for them, 40 Wisent 1 armored vehicles for demining, a Patriot system with shells, shells for Gepard self-propelled artillery systems, and other ammunition and equipment.

In addition, Canada has announced a new military assistance package. It will include assault rifles and machine guns. The country will also introduce new sanctions against Russia.

The powers of military enlistment offices have been expanded

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved amendments to the regulation on territorial centers of recruitment and social support (military commissariats), allowing them to carry out notification and conscription of citizens regardless of their place of military registration.

Akhmetov to sue Russia

Businessman Rinat Akhmetov is initiating an arbitration against Russia for the seized assets in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

These assets include dozens of enterprises in the mining, metallurgical, and energy sectors, as well as real estate, including Yenakiieve Steel, DTEK Rovenkyantratsyt, DTEK Sverdlovantratsyt, Kirsha training base, and Donbas Arena.

Akhmetov's office said that the money to be reimbursed by Russia will be used to rebuild Ukraine in the future. In particular, Akhmetov said that he would invest it in the restoration and construction of new enterprises, job creation, and economic growth in Ukraine.

Oksana Marchenko is put on the wanted list

The Security Service of Ukraine has put Oksana Marchenko, the wife of former MP Viktor Medvedchuk, on the wanted list. Law enforcement officials say she disappeared on March 24.

Marchenko was put on the wanted list by the Chief Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. She is charged under Part 3 of Article 110-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. It is also stated that she is hiding from the pre-trial investigation authorities.

Online services for Easter

Services in Kyiv churches will be held online during the Easter holidays. The curfew in the city will last from 00:00 to 05:00, the Kyiv city authorities reminded.

The city also appealed to the leaders of religious communities to limit the holding of mass services and to provide online broadcasts on Ukrainian TV channels and the Internet as much as possible.

Violations of language legislation

During the first quarter of 2023, the Language Ombudsman received 497 complaints about violations of the Law "On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language" in the field of consumer services. This is 56% of all appeals.

Most complaints concerned services in the state language on the Internet. Entrepreneurs must also maintain their websites and social networks in Ukrainian, the press service of the language ombudsman reminds.

  • On the morning of April 11, Russian aviation launched two guided missiles at the residential areas in Orikhiv and Huliaipole, Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

  • On April 10, an unknown drone crashed on the territory of the Shukhov airport in the Russian city of Belgorod. There were no casualties, but the airport fence was damaged.
  • Dnipro, Lviv, and Mukachevo have been awarded the status of “transparent” cities in the Transparency International Ukraine rating. Another 10 cities are recognized as “partially transparent”.
  • At its April 11 meeting, the Cabinet of Ministers dismissed Vadym Melnyk as director of the Bureau of Economic Security. The government also approved the appointment of the heads of two regional military administrations.
  • Armenia and Azerbaijan accuse each other of shelling on the border. Both sides report dead and wounded.
  • After the eruption of the Shiveluch volcano, the northernmost active volcano in Kamchatka, the strongest ashfall in 60 years was recorded on the peninsula.
