The United States handed over 15 generators to Mykolaiv, another 41 were delivered from Kazakhstan; the abbot of the Kyiv—Pechersk Lavra appealed to Zelenskyy: he asked not to take away the cathedrals. Here's what you may have missed from the previous night.
New supplies of generators
Kazakh businesses have donated 41 generators worth about $500,000 to Ukraine for healthcare institutions. The equipment was delivered in particular to those regions that are under constant Russian attacks: Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and others.
As part of the project "Strengthening Public Confidence", implemented with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), 15 generators were delivered to Mykolaiv.
It is noted that eight generators were received by heating points, and another seven went to the municipal enterprise "Mykolaivoblteploenergo", which will use them to ensure uninterrupted water supply in the conditions of power outages, in particular.
Address of the abbot of the Lavra to Zelenskyy
The abbot of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Metropolitan Pavlo (Lebed), appealed to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy with a request to leave the Assumption and Refectory Cathedrals with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).
According to Metropolitan Pavlo, on December 26, the director of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra State Reserve informed him that the lease of the Assumption and Refectory Cathedrals on the territory of the Upper Lavra expires on December 31.
MFA comments on scandal over appointment of new ambassador
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine commented on the appointment of Olesya Ilashchuk as Ambassador to Bulgaria. Earlier, the media accused her of lacking diplomatic experience.
According to the information available in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ilashchuk received a diploma with honors in the specialty "Country Studies" of the Department of International Relations of the Faculty of History, Political Science and International Relations of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that the Bulgarian government after assessing the candidacy of Ilashchuk, as is customary in international practice, immediately granted her an agréation without any reservations about her work in the country. At the same time, according to the Ministry, the appointment of non-career diplomats as ambassadors is a common international practice.
In other news:
- Dnipro said goodbye to two more symbols of Soviet power, culture, and history. And in Izyum (Kharkiv Oblast), 19 streets were renamed as more names of prominent Ukrainians appeared in the local toponymy;
- in different regions of Ukraine, as of the evening of December 26, about 9 million people remained without electricity, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said;
- the U.S. government has developed a special accelerated training program for the Ukrainian military to deploy the first Patriot battery in Ukraine in less than six months, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated;
- Ukrainians illegally transferred by Russians from the occupied territories to the annexed Crimea are being held in separate buildings in the Simferopol detention center. The men are being tortured, the Human Rights Center ZMINA reported.
