News, Movies, Cleaning & Food: Ukrainians Tell Sociologists About Their Quarantine

Nearly half of Ukrainians have begun to follow the news more often than usual during the coronavirus quarantine. One—third of Ukrainians began watching movies and TV shows more, cleaning their homes and cooking. About a quarter said they devoted more time to self—development, socializing with their loved ones, sleeping, eating, and listening to music.

Nearly half of Ukrainians have begun to follow the news more often than usual during the coronavirus quarantine. One-third of Ukrainians began watching movies and TV shows more, cleaning their homes and cooking. About a quarter said they devoted more time to self-development, socializing with their loved ones, sleeping, eating, and listening to music. One in five people became more involved in their hobbies, reading books or playing sports.

This is evidenced by the results of a poll by the sociological group "Rating", which was carried out on April 1-2.

At the same time, the quarantine has had a significant effect on outdoor walks – almost half said they were doing it less often than usual.

The restrictions also had a significant impact on communication with friends: about 40% said they did not talk to them as often as prior to the quarantine. And one in five was forced to restrict communication with loved ones, as well as their sports activities.

There are some differences in the quarantine behavior patterns in terms of gender. Women are watching the news and cooking more often. Men are more likely to play sports, and spend more time than usual on sleep, alcohol and sex – especially those men who are now quarantined and not working from an office.

In terms of age, representatives of the youngest age group (18-29 years) do the following more often than others: watch movies, engage in self-development, sports, hobbies, communicate with friends and family, sleep, eat, listen to music, and have sex. As for cooking in quarantine, it was those under 40 who now spend more time on it, as opposed to older people. Men especially have taken up this to a greater extent than before quarantine.

Analysis of the behavior of the respondents according to their employment under quarantine also provides some interesting insights. Respondents who are not working (either jobless or working remotely) have begun spending much more time sleeping, cooking and eating, doing sports, pursuing hobbies, communicating with loved ones, studying and self-developing, reading books, and watching movies and TV series. Even people who are going to work have started watching films, news, increasing their sleep and eating time (albeit less than those quarantined).

The survey is based on 1,300 respondents aged 18 and over. The non-sampling error of the study with a confidence figure of 0.95 is not more than 4%.
