Israel officially declared a state of war, singer and actress Nina Matvienko died, and military enlistment office workers in Ternopil beat up mobilized men. We have collected the main news of October 8.

Death of Nina Matvienko

Singer and People's Artist of Ukraine Nina Matvienko has died at the age of 75, her daughter Tonya Matvienko has announced. In two days, on October 10, Nina would have turned 76. The singer's daughter did not specify any details about how and when this happened.

Nina Matvienko was known, among other things, for performing folk songs, as well as participating in television and radio performances. The funeral service will take place on October 11 at the National Philharmonic in Kyiv and will last from 11:00 to 13:00.

The situation in Israel

On the evening of October 7, Israel's political and security cabinet voted to invoke Article 40 of the Aleph Law, i.e., to declare a state of war.

On October 8, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had an emergency phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who spoke about the situation in his country and actions to repel the attack.

It also became known that at least two Ukrainian citizens were killed in Israel after Hamas started fighting. Diplomats are taking steps to repatriate the bodies.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said that the events in Israel favor Russia and "distract the world's attention" from its war against Ukraine.

Beatings of mobilized persons at the military registration and enlistment office

A video has been posted online showing two employees of the Ternopil Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support beating mobilized people.

Criminal proceedings over the beating were opened under Part 5 of Article 426-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — abuse of power or authority by a military official committed under martial law. The sanction of the article provides for up to 12 years in prison.

Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said that his office had launched an investigation to establish the circumstances of the human rights violations.

In addition, the State Bureau of Investigation opened criminal proceedings against representatives of the Ternopil Regional Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support, who had pushed the man into a minibus the day before.

Shelling of Ukrainian regions

A 50-year-old man died in Antonivka, Kherson region, as a result of Russian shelling. Details of his death are being established. Earlier in the day, Russians opened fire on the village of Kindyka. An 11-year-old girl was wounded. She is currently in a coma.

Russians also shelled Vovchansk, located in the Chuhuiv district of the Kharkiv region. As a result, a 65-year-old woman was killed.

In the morning, the occupants fired a missile at the town of Kostiantynivka, Donetsk region. As a result, four people were wounded, including a child.

Mass poisoning of animals in the Kharkiv region

In the Feldman Ecopark near Kharkiv, a mass poisoning of animals from the contact zone occurred, leading to their deaths. An autopsy showed that the animals were poisoned with arsenic, the park's press service reported. Law enforcement is investigating the murder.

The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office said that the dead animals included 6 guinea pigs and 12 decorative rabbits. According to preliminary data, the animals were poisoned by someone present during the traditional festival of the eco-park “Chrysanthemum Ball”.

Death of a tourist on Hoverla

In the morning, the Rescue Service received a report that two hikers had gotten lost while descending the green route from Mount Hoverla.

One of the lost hikers was found on Hoverla, and rescuers accompanied him to the Zarosliak base. Later, between Hoverla Waterfall and the blue route, another tourist was found without signs of life. The rescuers tried to resuscitate him but failed to save him.
