Russia began practicing the defense of its northwestern borders after Finland joined NATO, and Macron said after a visit to China that Europe should reduce its dependence on the United States. Here is what you may have missed from the previous night.

Macron wants to reduce dependence on the US

French President Emmanuel Macron believes that Europe should reduce its dependence on the United States and avoid getting involved in a possible confrontation over Taiwan. He said this on his way back from a visit to China.

Macron emphasized his favorite theory of “strategic autonomy” for Europe, probably led by France, which could become a “third superpower”. Chinese leader Xi Jinping and the Communist Party of China support Macron's concept of “strategic autonomy”.

Russia is practicing border defense

Russia's army has begun practicing the defense of its northwestern borders after Finland joined NATO, with special attention being paid to air defense. Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Russia would be forced to respond to the alleged threats to national security arising from Finland's accession to NATO. To this end, Moscow promised to “take retaliatory measures of both military and technical and other nature”.

Leaked classified documents may be faked

The United States does not rule out the possibility that leaked classified Western intelligence documents could have been forged to mislead about their origin or to spread false information that could harm US security interests, Reuters reports.

The US authorities are allegedly investigating the source of the leak, but there has been no independent verification of the authenticity of the documents. At the same time, the Pentagon suspects that the documents could have been leaked by an American, not one of its allies: this is evidenced by the “depth of the topics covered in the documents”. They also do not rule out the possibility that "pro-Russian elements" may be behind the leak.
