Shelling of Sumy Oblast, new assistance from Norway: last night's highlights

The Russian military conducted a rocket attack on Sumy Oblast in the evening, causing heavy destruction; and Norway allocates $100 million to restore Ukraine's infrastructure. Here is what you may have missed from the previous night.

Shelling of Sumy Oblast

Russian occupation troops conducted a rocket strike on Sumy Oblast on the evening of December 9, and during the day they launched almost 50 mines in the region. Because of this, there is destruction there. And the day before, a house in one of the communities of the region burned to the ground because of explosives dropped by the Russians from a drone.

New assistance from Norway

Norway decided to allocate one billion kroner (approximately $100 million) to restore the infrastructure of Ukraine damaged by Russian missile strikes.

New schedules of blackouts in Kyiv

New schedules of stabilization blackouts have been introduced in Kyiv since December 9. They will report not only on periods when power companies promise to provide electricity, but also on cases when electricity is likely to be available.

Mine explosion in Rivne Oblast

A tractor trailer tripped a mine in Rivne Oblast. It happened when the locals were engaged in illegal logging. The driver and passenger were not injured in the explosion. They were detained after trying to escape.

Banksy helps Ukrainians

Anonymous artist Banksy has created 50 art screen prints. They will be sold through the Legacy of War Foundation. The proceeds will be used to help Ukrainians.

In other news:

  • Germany will provide Ukraine with two Skynex air defense systems worth 182 million euros. The delivery is scheduled for early 2024, German media reported.
  • On December 9, the Association for German Language (GfdS) chose the word for 2022 – Zeitenwende ("turning point" or "change of times"). German Chancellor Olaf Scholz used this word in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
  • The Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the UN Barbara Woodward said that Russia has convened a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the supply of Western weapons to Ukraine, but Russia itself receives weapons from Iran and probably looks for them among other countries.
