In the center of Kyiv, a soldier was stabbed, the case of Metropolitan Pavlo of the Moscow Patriarchate church was referred to the court, and Biden asked Congress for more than $60 billion for Ukraine. We have collected the main news for October 20.

Attack on a military officer in Kyiv

On the evening of October 19, in the Shevchenkivskyi district of the capital, unidentified persons attacked a serviceman and stabbed him several times. The victim is currently in hospital.

The police reported that they are conducting operational and search activities, reviewing footage from street surveillance cameras, and interviewing possible witnesses.

Progress in the case of the Metropolitan of the UOC-MP

The Security Service of Ukraine has completed the investigation and sent an indictment against Metropolitan Pavlo (Petro Lebid) of the Moscow Patriarchate to the court. He is accused of involvement in subversive activities against Ukraine.

The investigation found that the Metropolitan had repeatedly publicly denied the existence of Ukraine as a sovereign state. He also called the Russian armed aggression against Ukraine a "civil conflict" that has been going on since 2014.

He faces up to eight years in prison with confiscation of property.

Biden's request for additional funding for Ukraine

U.S. President Joe Biden has requested more than $100 billion in additional funding from Congress. As part of this package, the Biden administration is asking for approval of $61.4 billion for Ukraine, $14.3 billion for Israel, and $9.15 billion for humanitarian aid for these two countries, as well as for the Gaza Strip.

According to this request, part of the money will be spent on additional weapons and equipment to help Ukraine succeed on the battlefield, as well as to replenish the U.S. Department of Defense's stockpile of supplies spent on supporting Ukrainians.

Deaths due to Russian attacks

In the morning, Russian occupation forces conducted another air strike with guided bombs on the town of Beryslav, Kherson Oblast, killing an elderly woman.

In the evening, the Russians fired a missile at a dacha cooperative in Kryvyi Rih, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. As a result, a 60-year-old man was killed. A 57-year-old woman received shrapnel wounds. She is in serious condition in the hospital.

  • The German government has updated the list of military aid for the Ukrainian Defense Forces. It includes three Gepard systems,

20 RQ-35 Heidrun reconnaissance drones, 20 Vektor drones, and other weapons.

  • Over the past day, on October 19, the Ukrainian Defense Forces destroyed another 1,380 Russian troops, which is substantially more than usual. In total, during the full-scale invasion, Russia has lost approximately 292,060 soldiers in the war against Ukraine.
  • During the first nine months of 2023, the State Customs Service, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense, identified more than 3,000 cases of non-receipt of humanitarian aid by military units. These are the results of checking more than 9,000 episodes of transferring aid to the addresses of 200 military units.
  • In Kharkiv Oblast, a man who evaded conscription during mobilization was sentenced to three years in prison. He argued that he was "not ready to take up arms".
