German European Parliament Member Rebecca Harms is convinced that the German MFA Steinmeier’s position on Ukraine is different from Chancellor Merkel’s. Steinmeier has put equal blame on both the Russian and Ukrainian sides for breaching the ceasefire, which according to Harms is wrong. This strategy, according to Harms, ”will undermine the position of Germany and the EU in Ukraine.“

Harms explains that after the Minsk agreements were signed, Russia never stopped supplying the so-called separatists and soldiers with weapons and money, and they were able to regain hundreds of kilometers of Ukrainian territory. “How come the German MFA doesn’t see this when he talks about the situation?”

Harms says that Steinmeier’s position is more prominent among social democrats in the EU, and hopes that upcoming elections, won’t undermine Chancellor Merkel’s position: “Merkel is until today the person who kept the unity of the EU in favor of Ukraine.”
