Strongholds on left bank of Kherson region and a fatal accident involving patrol policemen: highlights of November 17

On the left bank of the Kherson region, Ukrainian troops have gained several strongholds. Law enforcement officers came to search at a charitable foundation, whose representatives were collecting money near the metro station, allegedly for the military. In Lviv, patrol officers hit a pedestrian and he died in the hospital. We have collected the main news for November 17.

Strongholds on the left bank of the Kherson region

The Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out a series of successful operations on the left bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson direction, as a result of which they managed to gain several strongholds, the command of the Marine Corps of the Ukrainian Navy reported.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that on the left bank of the Kherson region, the Ukrainian servicemen are trying to push the invaders as far as possible from the right bank. Sabotage, raid, and reconnaissance operations are carried out.

It is noted that since the beginning of the operation on the left bank of the Dnipro, Russia has lost 1,216 soldiers killed and 2,217 wounded.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the military operation on the left bank of the Kherson region: “Glory to each and everyone who returns freedom and justice to Ukraine”.

Checking a fund collecting money near the metro

Ukrainian law enforcement officers came with searches to a charitable foundation, whose representatives were collecting money near the Kyiv metro, allegedly for the military, but at the request of activists, they were unable to provide reports on the collections.

The day before, military man and activist Oleh Symoroz visited money collection points near the Heroiv Dnepra metro station. He said that “solvers” and “titushky” arrived at the scene, followed by employees of the Obolonskyi district police department of Kyiv. The police said that law enforcement officers resolved the conflict on the spot and brought five representatives of the charitable foundation to the police department.

Russia is preparing a disinformation plan “Maidan-3”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he received information from intelligence and partners about Russia’s intentions to spread a new disinformation plan — the so-called “Maidan-3”.

According to the president, Moscow is seeking to sow division in Ukrainian society, creating chaos within the country and, ultimately, eliminating the president.

More than 23 thousand men were detained while trying to leave

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, border guards have recorded more than 23,700 citizens liable for military service who tried to illegally leave the country but were prevented.

According to border guards, in 2023 fewer attempted border violations are recorded than in 2022.

At the same time, as the BBC reported, citing information provided by the Ukrainian authorities, since the beginning of the full-scale war, 19,740 cases have been recorded in which people successfully left Ukraine in violation of the law.

Patrol officers hit a pedestrian in Lviv

On the morning of November 17, an accident occurred in Lviv involving a police patrol car and a 70-year-old pedestrian. He subsequently died in hospital.

The Lviv Territorial State Bureau of Investigation told hromadske that the man was hit at a pedestrian crossing. His identity is now being established.

The State Bureau of Investigation initiated criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Art. 286 of the Criminal Code. This is punishable by up to 8 years in prison. The investigation has ordered several examinations that will help establish all the circumstances of the accident.

A volunteer from Georgia was denied rental housing

In Kyiv, a Georgian volunteer was denied an apartment rental due to his disability. Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets called this a manifestation of direct discrimination against people with disabilities and their relatives.

The wife of a military man, Katrina Kalaitanova, said that her husband had served as a volunteer in the Georgian Legion since February 24. During the fighting he lost both legs, he underwent rehabilitation and is adapting to prostheses. The family began looking for housing, but the landlord turned them down.
