The release from captivity of 215 defenders and the transfer of Medvedchuk to Moscow: the last night’s highlights
Ukraine freed 215 people from captivity, the Russians handed over Viktor Medvedchuk, and the Ukrainian military struck the command posts of the occupiers in Kherson. Here is what you may have missed from the last night.
Release of 215 defenders
On September 21, Ukraine managed to free 215 people from Russian captivity, including 108 Azov fighters. The President's Office reported the details of the exchange, which took place in general in several locations:
- 200 Ukrainian soldiers were exchanged for Viktor Medvedchuk, whose daughter’s godfather is Putin and who “has already given all possible evidence to the investigation”;
- 5 commanders from "Azovstal" were exchanged for 55 Russian soldiers who “are of no interest for us”;
- Russia released 10 captured foreigners to Saudi Arabia.
The five released commanders are now in Turkey under the security and protection of President Recep Erdoğan and will remain there until the end of the war.

Damage to command posts in Kherson
The Ukrainian military on the southern front hit several enemy facilities and bases, including two command posts directly in temporarily occupied Kherson.
During the day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the south destroyed more than forty occupants and 17 hardware units, a Russian Mi-24 helicopter, and 2 Orlan-10 type spy drones.
EU ministers convene an emergency meeting
The foreign ministers of the EU member states, who are currently in New York at the UN General Assembly, will hold an emergency meeting to discuss the latest developments in the Russian-Ukrainian war, including Vladimir Putin's nuclear threats and his announcement of partial mobilization.
“The common line, I'm sure, can be briefly described as follows: “We will not allow ourselves to be intimidated and continue to fully support the sovereignty of Ukraine,” said EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell.
Finland is preparing to ban entry for Russians
Finland is preparing its own national decision to limit or completely stop tourist traffic from Russia. This is the last EU country where Russians can still cross the land border with the EU using Schengen visas.
Zelenskyy spoke at the UN General Assembly
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking via video link at the UN General Assembly, said that Moscow is not serious about the negotiations on ending the war.
“We can return the Ukrainian flag to our entire territory. We can do it by force of arms. But we need time,” he emphasized.

Germany has already frozen Russian assets worth almost 5 billion euros. The country's Ministry of Economy believes that the sanctions significantly impact the Russian economy.
The national team of Ukraine lost to Scotland in the Nations League match. In their fourth match of the UEFA Nations League group stage, the Ukrainian team lost 3:0.
In Russia, more than 1,200 people were detained at protests against mobilization. Most of them are in Moscow and St. Petersburg. During the detentions, law enforcers used force.
