Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, six out of 15 former USSR countries have experienced war: Moldova, Georgia, Ukraine, Russia, Tajikistan, and Azerbaijan.
Some of these conflicts have led to the formation of breakaway regions – Transnistria, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Karabakh – which are unrecognized by most of the world. These regions’ names won’t be found on official maps and their residents often face social instability and difficulties with business. Some of them make plans to move away, yet others are satisfied with the state of things.
While there has been no resolution, Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the subsequent Moscow-led hostilities in Ukraine’s east that followed have sparked a renewed interest in disputed territories around the world.
