Tokayev Wins Early Presidential Elections in Kazakhstan

Former Kazakh Leader Nursultan Nazarbayev’s handpicked successor has won 70.76% of the vote in the presidential election, according to the country’s Central Election Commission.

Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev – currently serving as the Acting President of Kazakhstan – was widely expected to win after Nazarbayev’s endorsement, who officially stepped down as president in March.

Nazarbayev continues to hold key political positions and still enjoys considerable power within the country.

The turnout was 77.4% in the Almaty region – the highest in the nation.

Police in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, detained some dozens of people protesting the election which some international observers was marred by “clear violations of fundamental freedoms."
